My first day at work
So today was an action packed day. I went to work at 8ish and hit the ground running. I got an idea of what they wanted me to do, and what they had going on. I met a couple of dozen people, and everyone is very nice. I don't have a computer yet, but I have a desk so I am set. I really think I am going to like it there. It sure was relaxing and laid back.
The weather was beautiful today after our tornado last night. Most of the area was out of power for over 12 hours. I thankfully was not. The tornado touched down in downtown Syracuse, and it tore off the roof of a bar. My recruiter met me this morning, and she said they NEVER have tornados. I told her that I must have brought them from Indiana. Jim just missed one yesterday afternoon, but southern IN and northern KY got hit pretty hard.
The building I work in is an old water mill built in the mid 1800's. They kept all of the original infrastructure, so there are 6x6 stone pillars holding it up and huge 3x3 solid wood beams visible inside the building. It is so neat! I'll try to get pictures in the near future. I decided my first day was not a good time to start snapping photos. I had found the place on Sunday, but it turned out to be the wrong one. My building is smaller than the huge one I found Sunday. It turns out they have 3 places in the area. They actually do manufacturing in my building. I get a tour later this week, and I am excited about it.
We are out in the middle of nowhere so we have our own cafeteria, which is nice. They have drinks, a salad bar, sandwiches, and hot food. And it is all very cheap, and it looks good too. I worked through lunch today, I looked up and it was 4:15. That's the kind of job I like!
I made it to a coffee shop in Liverpool tonight, that is how I am posting. I think digital cable is in my future.
I am impressed by the people I have met here thusfar. It is such a contrast from Indiana, and much like Tennessee. People are nice, quick to say hello and to converse, and they all make eye contact. Everyone has been helpful offering directions and suggestions on places to go, from clerks at the grocery store to the lady I ran into at the sub shop.
I have had such a different experience here. I guess my prior experience was telephone contracting, in which I was seen as an outsider and temporary, but they have welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home and above all wanted! Everyone at work knew I was coming, and they are excited about what I'll be able to do.
