South Dakota is very boring
The next morning we wanted to see Sioux City in the daylight so we went back into town. Wow was it really depressing. There were tons of smoke stacks and gross stuff billowing out all over town. We went on over to South Sioux City Nebraska, and saw the entire city from the other side of the river. No, it did not get any better.
South Dakota was not so pretty. I know my pictures of Iowa did not do it justice, but trust me... there was a world of difference.
We then headed back into South Dakota and started making our way across. We made some detours, and contemplated all of the roadside distractions. One that I fixated on early on was Wall Drug. I had always heard of it and I wanted to go! Another attraction I wanted to stop at was the Corn Palace in Mitchell South Dakota. We kept seeing signs for it, and I knew I had to go there. I did not know what to expect, so we got off in Mitchell SD and snaked through the ugly little town to the “famous” Corn Palace. Holy crap! The front was made completely of corn products. They had a little museum inside, but we soon realized that the REAL attraction was the basketball court – which also was adorned with corn products. Hey… they had a great gift shop. The couple that ran it go to Gatlinburg to trade shows!
After our disappointing jaunt in Mitchell we sulked for a ways more until we got to the Badlands. On our way to the park, we stopped at this weird general store/prairie dog petting zoo. They were closed for the season, but the prairie dogs were still there. We went out to look at them and they came toward us expecting food. It was kind of scary, but they were so cute… and fat.
We went on to the Badlands. It was SO gorgeous!!! I could not really comprehend it!
After the Badlands we made it to Wall Drug. It was HUGE! We had fun going through all the various parts and looking at all of the stuff. We perused the black hills gold section – very interesting. Mom and I had our picture taken in a photo booth, and we ate some yummy cherry pie and a homemade donut. They also have the BEST coffee.
We did not make it into the Black Hills because the weather was getting bad. By the time we left South Dakota it was snowing and the sun was going down. We pushed on through Wyoming, getting into Sheridan WY close to 9pm. Sheridan is almost to the Montana border. There was a good bit of snow coming down, and we were going to a higher and higher elevation as it went on. We decided to push it to hopefully keep from getting stuck. So we did not get to see much of Wyoming in the daylight.
