The best day ever… the morning
James and I had the best day today. We got up kind of late and had a nice breakfast. We then went in search of the perfect Christmas tree.
Okay… let me back up and give you guys the back story of the Christmas tree. James and I have never had a tree. we have never decorated for Christmas. Nor have we ever wrapped presents for each other and not open them until the big day. Well last year James got a wild hair and decided he wanted to have a tree. We started painstakingly gathering ornaments over the past year in anticipation of getting a tree.
And no people… don’t think this an opportunity to send us ornaments.
Anyway… we had it in our heads that we wanted to cut our own tree. I wasn’t sure how that would work. Do you bring your own saw, or do they provide one for you to use? That seems like a terrible liability issue. I could just imagine a forest full of people with bleeding stumps – theirs not the tree’s. After breakfast we decided not to cut our own. It had rained the day before so it would be a muddy mess. We thought about just going to Lowes and getting a tree, but we had looked the other night, and they were bad looking. Plus I really wanted to get a local tree. So we drove out to the area with all of the orchards and tree farms. We stopped in at a local nursery to check out their selection. They had a display of trees all set up, and after one was bought they brought out another and set it out. They all looked weird, some of them even looked dried out. We met this little old couple there. The husband was standing guard over a tree that they wanted, while the wife looked around for a better one. It was so funny. We decided to try some other places. We passed a couple of places that kinda looked skanky. We were driving by one, and this little guy was holding a tree for someone to inspect, and I yelled out to James “that one looks perfect!” He whipped it in. They were pretty busy, and it was drizzling. They had all the trees sort of propped up. The smell was heavenly! They had 2 kinds of trees – douglas pines and noble firs. We were looking at the noble firs. The Douglas pines were the big bristley looking trees. The trees out here look so different. The needles are soft, the branches curl slightly, and they have a hint of a blue-ish tint to them. There were several little cub scouts running around acting creepy. One asked me if I needed help finding a tree, and then stared at me bug eyed after I grumbled no. I came to find out later that there were in fact there to help out… still creepy. I think I made James hold up every tree for me to inspect. Well we found one… we walked away from it to look again at our second choice, and this ho-bag decided she wanted it.
Don’t worry. I didn’t challenge her to a fight to the death, a duel, or a showcase showdown. James and I just stood by and hoped she would go on. Well she didn’t. They loaded it in her little car, and she left. James was getting pretty frustrated at this point, and I just kept going back and forth between 2 trees. One of the tree guys said he would find me the perfect tree, and he went over to the ones that were still wrapped, and pulled one out and unwrapped it. I had gone back to our other 2 choices when he called over and said he had found it. James and I looked at it, and I said that we’d take it. Well it wasn’t perfect, but it was just as good as any of the others. James pulled the Subaru around and the guys threw it on top.
We made it home, and rolled it off the car. It was REALLY big. James cut the trunk to fit it in the tree stand… about 8 inches came off. We took the heavy thing inside and put it in the stand. Holy cow it was way too big!!! It was over 8 1/2 feet tall. We laid it down in the living room and James cut another 6-8 inches off. We got it back in the stand, and decided it was okay. It is REALLY big!
