Finally in the UK

Well it has been a two day adventure, but it was well worth it. Annemari, a girl from work, and I left bright and early saturday morning. We flew to Los Angeles, then to Frankfurt Germany, and then to Manchester. Yes, that is quite a convoluted way to go, but it was the best we could do when buying our tickets a few days before leaving. The LA flight to Frankfurt was 10 hrs and 40 minutes. In Frankfurt we had to go through security 5 times. Yes 5 times. All I have to say is sleeping pills rock. We flew Lufthansa (part of United) and it was pretty nice and comfy. We got to Manchester about 1pm on sunday. They are 8 hours ahead of Portland.

After arriving in Manchester we then drove to Liverpool and checked into a weird assed Holiday Inn Express. The bathroom had a walk in, doorless shower, but the thing was you had to step up into it. So I fit, but it felt closterphobic… Jim would not have been able to stand upright in it. There also was no light switch in the bathroom. I took me forever to figure out how to turn on any of the lights at all. There was this weird thing on the wall by the door that you had to put your room key in, and then the lights and all the power would work. There was also no alarm clock. The hotel was on Albert Dock. We had a great time walking around. I love all of the old buildings! We ate at a very nice Indian restaurant (they refer to Indians as Asians here) which had some of the best Indian food I have ever had. Their dal was not as good as yours Maki!!!!

We rented a car, and we were advised to get one with a navigation system ("sat nav" as they say here). I opted for one that had a built in system so we ended up getting an Audi A6 wagon. If you aren't familiar with it, it is a pretty large and long car. Its a good ride though. I opted for the full coverage since I thought it was likely that I would run headlong into someone. I scared the crap out of Annemari on the way to Liverpool, but I actually adjusted to it pretty well. It was handy having her reminding me - ".... ummmm.... wrong lane" or squealing "tooo close" as she slid over into my lap when I ventured too far over.

So far an adventure.
