Lakeview Oregon

Tonight we stopped in Lakeview OR which is right at the Oregon-California border, spending the night in a creepy Best Western. It was an awesome day! On our way down we passed through some pretty intense forest fire zones. There was alot of damage and it looked unreal. Its kinda scary to think of being there during all of that. We also got to see a bunch of the volcanoes.

We stopped off at Lava Beds National Park. It was intense. We walked the trail through the lava beds. It was weird the vegetation that is thriving there. The lava fields were huge... it kinda looked like a different planet.

Ahhh... the most fun part of the day! Mom had found a place called Big Hole on the map before we left (she also saw Hole in the Ground, but we couldn't get to it with my car). We discovered that the road markings in that area were horrible if non existent. We passed what we thought was the road, and ended up turning around a few miles later to go back. We found one of the roads to Hole in the Ground, and it was un-drivable. Jim was very skeptical of my car's ability to drive down the road the Big Hole, but I had confidence. I mean really... I went off roading in the national ATV park in California! That was fun! We drove down this bumpy dirt road, and we drive the loop around the Big Hole. The hole was a maar (crater explosion) several miles across. It kinda looked like a souffle. It was kinda hard to fathom the scale of it. Personally I had a great time driving the loop. I think Jim was impressed with my off roading ability!

After Big Hole we went to Fort Rock, which is a ring around a volcanic vent. Wow! It was a spontaneous decision to go to it, and I'm really glad we over to it. It was pretty amazing.

After Fort Rock we skirted a storm and drove by a few nearly dry lake basins before reaching our remote destination - Lakeview. It was a little perplexing that we went hours without passing a gas station. We were on hwy 398, which is actually a pretty substantial hwy through that area.
